Falling Sick

The sun shone brilliantly in the vast blue sky. It was a mundane Saturday afternoon. Mary and John decided to go jogging at Bishan Park which was a stone’s throw away from their home. Even though John had complained that the weather was too hot, Mary still insisted on going jogging. Finally, Mary managed to persuade John to go with her.

In the blink of any eye, the duo reached the park. Mary was grinning like a Cheshire cat, as she loved exercising. “Come and catch me!” taunted Mary as a smirk spread across her face. Immediately, John started to sprint after her. No matter how quickly John ran, he still could not catch her. At last, he stopped chasing Mary and stomped his feet in frustration. “It’s not fair! I can never catch you! Why don’t we jog around the park instead?” John grumbled angrily. Mary agreed. After about twenty minutes, they had jogged about three rounds already! They then continued to do this for two more hours.

Suddenly, John’s head started to spin and his vision began to blur. He also started to feel very tired. However, he did not want to seem like a weakling in front of Mary so he continued to jog for half an hour more. As he was jogging, Jack could not stand the dizziness any longer so he collapsed onto the floor. Upon seeing this, Mary hurriedly called John’s parents and told them that John had collapsed onto the floor at Bishan Park. Other joggers crowded around John to see what had happened.

Soon, John’s parents arrived at the scene. They pushed through the crowd and saw John lying on the ground. Without hesitation, they carried John back home to take his temperature. Luckily, he only had a slight fever and would be in the pink of health again in no time. Mary was apologetic for forcing John to run under the hot sun. She also learnt a lesson to never exercise under the sweltering heat again lest she also falls sick.

An Unfortunate Day Out with my Best Friend

One day, my best friend and I were going out at the park cycling. The sky was full of cotton wool clouds. We guffawed with glee as were having fun. My best friend told me that he had learnt some new stunts.

“Look at me!” he yelled as he did the stunt. He was riding his bicycle without using his hands! I was surprised as he threw his hands in the air. That was such an awesome stunt! Time flew past and soon, I told my best friend that I needed to go home.

Before I left, he raced down a steep slope. He was not looking where he was cycling as he called out to me. I realised that he was cycling towards a bench. “LOOK OUT!!!!” I screamed as I pointed at the bench. However, my best friend, glanced around and immediately did a swift turn as he pressed on the brakes. Overcome with fright, he lost his balance and fell down in a swoon. Fighting back tears, he grimaced in pain as he tried to stand up. I was petrified and stood there with my mouth hung open. I rushed to his side and asked him if he was alright. “Ca..ll ca…lll tt..he..the am..bul…ance,” he whimpered. I immediately whipped out my phone and dialed “999”. I told the paramedics where we were and soon, we heard the familiar wailing of sirens.

While the ambulance rushed my best friend to the hospital, I quickly called his parents and my parents. Soon, we were at the hospital. My best friend’s parents burst into the room and asked the doctor if he was alright. The doctor replied that he had just sprained his ankle.

At the hospital, my best friend apologised to his parents as he had sped down the slope when they told him not to. He was dispirited and regretted his actions because for the next few days, walking was difficult and cycling was almost impossible. It was indeed an unfortunate day!

An Unfortunate Day Out with my Best Friend

“Hi Ben, do you want to cycle with me along the road?” I asked him as my eyes lit up with exuberance. “Alright!” We took our bicycles and soon headed off.

On our bicycles, we were guffawing with glee and shrieking in excitement. Ben started doing stunts and I was amazed that he could do those stunts! I wished I could do them too! At that juncture, a brilliant idea struck me. I dared Ben to have a race with me. “Bring it on!” Ben declared and we started the race in no time. While we were travelling down a steep slope, I looked up ahead and saw a bench right ahead. I tried to get Ben’s attention frantically but he was too engrossed in the race.

Bang! Ben’s bicycle headed towards the bench. Overcome with fright, he lost his balance and fell down in a swoon. Tears careened down his face and blood started to ooz out from his knee and elbow. Passers-by stopped dead in their tracks when they saw Ben falling off his bicycle. I phoned Ben’s parents and they were shocked to hear that. They rushed to the scene and to help him clear the wound on his knee and elbow.

Without a moment’s delay, Ben was sent to the clinic for a check-up. I followed them to the clinic and heaved a sigh of relief when we heard that he was fine.

From that day onwards, Ben and I decided not to take up any challenge from each other. We hoped this painful incident would not happen again. We would not forget how Ben fell down onto the ground with great thud. It was an unfortunate day with my best friend.

An Unfortunate Day Out with my Best Friend

“This is fun!” a voice repeated in my head as I recalled what happened that fateful day.

It was a beautiful Sunday morning. The sky was full of cotton-wool clouds. My best friend, James, and I were at East Coast Park playing when James suggested that we both rent a bike. Our eyes sparkled with happiness as we looked at the vast selection of bikes that we could choose from. We were spoilt for choice. In the end, we both decided to rent a stunt bike. “This is going to be fun!” James shrieked in excitement as he climbed onto his stunt bike. James and I guffawed with glee as we cycled and raced each other around East Coast Park.

“Hey John! I bet you can’t do this!” James sneered as he let go his hands and legs from the bike. Amazed at his reckless act, I eagerly wanted him to think that I was just as cool, so I balanced myself and followed what he did. But within seconds, I started wobbling and shaking. My fear escalated into horror, as I lost my balance and fell down in a pile of rocks. The pain immediately hit me like a thousand bricks. I had scratches and bruises all over my body and had a big cut on my knee. Blood was oozing out wildly, as it trickled down from my knee. James helped me to the nearest bench to rest and he comforted me.

That was truly an unfortunate day out with my best friend.

A Minor Inconvenience

Golden fingers of the sunlight shone onto the surface of the earth roasting everything in its path. I was dashing to the train station as I was late for school. There were people from all walks of life. Some were dressed impressively while others strolled about in casual clothing. I jostled my way through and finally boarded a train.

Kaboom! A loud sound echoed through the train tunnel and the train came to an abrupt halt. “Attention please. This train has broken down. Please alight the train. Please board the bus instead. Thank you for your cooperation” a low voice announced over the public announcement system. Virtually all the passengers around me groaned, including myself.

I made my way to the bus stop which was packed to the brim with people. Hot fumes emitted by the heavy vehicles added to the discontent of people. The salty smell of perspiration filled the air. Frustration nibbled at my heart when I was waiting for the bus. After waiting for what what seemed like an eternity, I had no choice but to book a taxi.

When I reached school, I was late. I explained to my teacher was had happened on my way to school. Fortunately, she forgave me. She had seen the news of the breakdown on the television. I sighed heavily in relief before making my way to class.

What a dreadful day!

A Robbery

It was very late in the evening and Mr Lee, the manager of the shop, was at the cashier counter counting how much money they had raked in that day. As he glanced at his watch, he whispered under his breath, “12.00 a.m. finally! Time to go home for a good rest.” When he turned around to organize the shelves and do the final packing, he heard the doorbell ring.

Ding! Dong! Ding! Dong! “Urgh! Who could it be at this hour? I just want to go home and rest!” Mr Lee muttered under his breath. Still, he put on his best smile and spun around on his heels. That was when he saw something unexpected. He let out an involuntary gasp and was transfixed by what was before him. A man dressed in black and donning a balaclava stood before him. In a menacing voice, the man bellowed, “surrender all your money and put it in this canvas bag!” The man then brandished a weapon that glinted maliciously under the bright light. With the knife pointed at his neck, Mr Lee had no choice but to throw all his notes and coins into the bag. His heart was beating against his rib cage furiously. Wild thoughts swarmed through his mind as he tried to think of a solution to escape.

All of a sudden, an idea struck him.

Once the robber had secured the loot, the robber slowly inched backwards, moving the blade away from Mr Lee’s neck. That was when quick-thinking Mr Lee quickly dashed out of the shop and locked the robber in the shop before he could even escape. Then, he took out his hand phone and called the police. Within minutes, the wailing sirens of the police cars announced their arrival. Mr Lee unlocked the door and the culprit was caught. Everyone who witnessed what had happened gawked in dismay. Mr Lee heaved a sigh of relief.

What a close shave!

School Sports Day

The blistering hot sun beat down on the crimson red tracks. John and his teammates, Nathon, Adam and James, had trained hard for the finals. After many months of grueling training, the day had finally come. John scanned through the sea of faces and saw his parents punching their fists in the air. A sudden surge of confidence rose in him. Soon, his team was called onto the track. There was a buzz of excitement as the competitors ambled onto the track.

The overwhelming din of cheers from the spectators filled the air. Many students made a beeline for the milo truck to quench their thirst. Their principle announced in a stern voice, “Participants of the race please proceed now. Thank you!” As the competitors were marching to the track, the school bully ambled up to John and tapped his shoulder.“I can’t believe I am competing against you, loser!” the bully taunted as he gave John a scornful smirk. John felt uneasy but he quickly shook the feeling away, as he wanted to focus on the race. They bully’s taunting only spurred him on.

BANG! The race had begun. John’s team member took the baton and bolted forward at top speed. He passed it to James, who soon passed it on to Adam. Soon, it would be John’s turn. John knew that his team members were depending on him.

The atmosphere was electric as the crowd cheered for their favorite team. Adam’s hair was flying all over the place as he hurtled towards John. Their team was currently in the lead! John’s moment was finally here. He grabbed the baton from Adam and sprinted at full speed. All of a sudden, he felt the baton slipping out of his hands. Like a slow-motion film, John tripped over something and fell with a loud thud. The audience gasped in unison. John could feel his cheeks flush with shame. Tears sat on the brink of his eyes, not daring to flow out. Wild thoughts swarmed through John’s mind. What had just happened? What did I trip over? Are we going to lose? John could feel his teammates staring daggers at him. Mustering all of his strength, he pushed himself up and dashed to the finishing line.

Everyone was cheering John’s name. To John’s surprise, his team had won the race! John was bursting with elation. John’s coach was beaming with pride as the crowd cheered, “John! John! John!”

What a memorable experience this Sports Day had been!

A Drowning Incident

Have you ever been in a situation so perilous you could have lost your life?

It was a Saturday morning. My mum woke me and my sister, Esther and we roused groggily. She told us we were going swimming! We shot out of bed and quickly packed our swimming clothes, setting off to the swimming pool. We were really excited for mum only lets us go swimming once in a blue moon. The sun shoe like a ball of fire roasting everything in its path. Sweat trickled down forehead as beads of perspiration formed on my nose. I could not wait to get into the car and turn on the air conditioner!

Splash! Me and Esther jumped into the pool. “Let’s have a race!” suggested Esther and I went along with it. “Na na na poo poo! You can’t get me!” she taunted as she stuck her tongue out at me. Within seconds, I was ahead of her. “Ha ha!” I retorted as I glanced back. Little did I know what was going to happen next would give me the shock of my life. Suddenly, an acute pain jolted up my right leg. I felt like I was sinking in the water. Panic rose in my heart.

As I was drowning, a burning sensation rose in my heart as I knew I could die at any moment. “Help! Help!” I yelled as my head was bobbing up and down above the water. I flailed my arms around helplessly and wildly to catch attention.

Suddenly, I saw an orange buoyant, covered with algae drifting towards me. “Grab on to the buoyant!” a voice yelled. I grabbed on to the disgusting buoyant. A bright light pierced through my eyes as I forced them open. Someone pulled me back to shore. He thumped on my chest and I sputtered out the pool water I had drank. From a distance, I could hear the wailing sirens from the ambulance announcing their arrival. My parents eyes swelled up in tears in the ambulance because of my careless and irresponsible action to swim without taking care of myself. I promised them not to do it again.

I am thankful I survived that terrible ordeal.

Discipline

“The sum of a hundred and eight divided by nine is…” Mrs Lim explained as she stared at her paper. We were all staring into mid-air trying to focus until everyone heard a familiar voice shouting from the door.

Rudely interrupted by the loud noise, our teacher ambled towards the commotion without hesitation. We were looking at each other with bewilderment. Curiosity soon got the better of us and we all rose in unison and scampered towards the door to survey the scene.

To our surprise, we saw a notorious boy and his teacher yelling at each other. Both of them glared at the other as they clenched their fists in anger. “Get back to your seat!” the teacher ordered as he stared daggers at the young boy. “Make me, you don’t have the guts!” the notorious boy retorted in a vehement and resentful voice as he pointed at the teacher. Everyone hushed with tense silence. Both of their shoulders heaved up and down. After a while, the teacher’s fist uncurled and his facial expression softened. Everyone was petrified of what had just happened. Mrs Lim asked everyone to get back to class.

A few minutes later, Mrs Lim told us that the notorious boy had been kicked out of school. Everyone who had witnessed the scene learnt not to be insolent to the teachers.

An Excursion

Screech! We all let out a hoot of glee as the bus came to a stop. Everyone from my class was bursting with elation as we waited for the bus. By the time the bus arrived, sweat was dripping from our hair. The sun was just too hot! We all jostled up the air- conditioned bus so that we could enjoy the cooling breeze on our faces. We were all riding on cloud nine as were going to the Botanic Gardens for a school excursion!

The trees danced in the wind and it was a beautiful day. “Stay together as a group. I do not want anyone to get lost!” the teacher hollered to the class with her arms akimbo. The teacher strolled to the first station and told us to gather in twenty minutes. As I skipped around, I saw flowers of all kinds and there were all types of insects. After moving on to a few more places, the sky became overcast. Everyone murmured to each other and there was a tinge of disappointment in our voices.

All of a sudden, the teacher exclaimed as she waved her hands in the air, “James is missing!” She bolted off to find James as fast as she could. The teacher told the class captain to bring the class under the shelter.

Drip! Drip! Drip! My class went to seek shelter under a shade when it started to rain. Everyone was worried until we saw the teacher coming back in dripping wet clothes, along with James. Thankfully, he was safe and unhurt. He looked mortified and his eyes were puffy with traces of wetness around the lids. His face turned beet red as our eyes were all transfixed on him.

By now, there was a heavy downpour. When we boarded the bus, we all felt dejected as we had to leave the Botanic Gardens. Even though James got lost, we were glad that the teacher had found him. What an adventurous day!
